Qatar ready to help rebuild ravaged Gaza

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar has voiced its full readiness to contribute to reconstruction of the war-ravaged Gaza Strip following the ceasefire agreement reached in Cairo between Israel and Palestinians on Wednesday.

In a statement issued early yesterday, Qatar hoped that the agreement would be a step towards alleviating the suffering of the people in Gaza and achieving the legitimate demands of the Palestinians.

The statement added that the credit for achieving this agreement is primarily due to the steadfastness of the Palestinian people and their sacrifices.

Qatar also expressed its appreciation to all those who contributed to reaching the agreement and said it is ready to contribute to the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip as early as possible.

Qatar has been the major contributor to reconstruction of Gaza after the wars launched by Israel over the past few years.

Lately, the Qatari committee for rebuilding Gaza allocated $10m in the first phase and began to pay amounts to owners of residential units damaged during the latest Israeli aggression, Aljazeera reported.

Last July, Qatar called for establishment of a commercial port in Gaza as a temporary solution and demanded lifting of the siege imposed on the city since 2006.

The ceasefire agreement mentioned that the reconstruction of Gaza will be carried out under the supervision of the Palestinian unity government.

In a statement issued by Maan, a Palestinian news agency, Moosa Abu Marzouq, Vice-Chairman of the political office of Hamas, said the reconstruction of Gaza is going to be discussed in a donors' conference in Cairo next month. Norway has called for this conference.

Leading Qatari charitable organisations have launched fund- raisers to support the people of Gaza since the beginning of the Israeli aggression.

Sheikh Eid bin Mohammad Al Thani Charitable Association will today launch an urgent relief campaign, 'We are All Gaza', to raise QR100m to support the people of Gaza.
