The United Nations special envoy for the Great Lakes Region received at the African Union


(MENAFNEditorial) ADDIS ABABA Ethiopia August 27 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU) Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma met with the newly-appointed United Nations Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region Said Djinnit on 26 August 2014 at the AU's headquarters in Addis Ababa as he begins his new mission in the Great Lakes Region. Mr. Djinnit also held discussions with the Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui.

The discussions focused on ways to provide greater support from the international community to the efforts of the countries of the region in implementation of the Peace Security and Cooperation (PSC) Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Region in order to consolidate the advances recorded in recent months. In this regard both organizations underlined the need to promote and strengthen confidence among the countries of the region complete the neutralization of the negative forces and give all the necessary attention to the economic and developmental dimension of the PSC Framework. The AU and the United Nations have renewed their commitment to strengthen their partnership in support of the countries of the region.

It should be recalled that Mr. Djinnit was appointed Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 17 July 2014 in replacement of Ms. Mary Robinson.
