Belgium- Rasmussen welcomes ISAF Commander


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen Tuesday welcomed the appointment of General John Campbell who earlier today assumed duties as the Commander, International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

Rasmussen in a statement noted that Campbell is taking up his post at an important time for Afghanistan and for the ISAF mission.

"The Afghan security forces are leading all security operations. By the end of this year they will have full security responsibility to protect the Afghan population. I am confident that General Campbell will lead ISAF through an orderly completion at the end of this year and guide our efforts to continue to support the Afghan Security Forces, once the required legal framework is in place," said the NATO chief.

During his 35 years of service in the US army , Campbell has served in Germany, Haiti, Iraq, Afghanistan and the United States.

Rasmussen also thanked the outgoing ISAF commander General Jospeh Dunford who has taken over as Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps.
