Iraq- Pentagon announces int'l partnership to resupply Kurdish troops

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Seven countries have committed to aiding the US and Iraq in restocking weapons supplies for Kurdish troops battling the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the Pentagon announced Tuesday.

Albania, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Italy, France, and the United Kingdom will be taking part in the US-led working group commissioned by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel two weeks ago.

The allies will "accelerate resupply efforts to the embattled Kurdish forces in northern Iraq," and operations "will accelerate in the coming days with more nations also expected to contribute," Hagel said in a statement.

"This multinational effort, which is being coordinated with the Government of Iraq in Baghdad, will greatly assist Kurdish forces in repelling the brutal terrorist threat they face from ISIL," he added.

"The determination of the Iraqi people and the international community to counter the threat posed by ISIL is only growing, and the United States looks forward to working with our friends from around the world to assist this effort."
