Kerala puts Dera chief under scanner refuses to bear security cost

Date:

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The 46-year-old Dera chief who is said to have over 50 million devotees across the world was provided Z-plus category security following threat to his life from Khalistani militants.Alleging mystery behind his mission the Kerala government has refused to meet the cost of security being provided to controversial Sikh cleric of Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS) sect Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh during his frequent visits to the state.

The state government stand has been conveyed to Haryana government by the State Home Secretary. The letter addressed to Haryana Additional Chief Secretary (Home) has also sought reimbursement of Rs250000 spent by the state police for providing security to the Dera chief during his recent visit of Vagamon.

The 46-year-old Dera chief who is said to have over 50 million devotees across the world was provided Z-plus category security following threat to his life from Khalistani militants.

The radical Sikh groups accused him of blasphemy after he was compared to 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh the 10th master in Sikh Dharma.

The government has been deploying more than 50 security personnel whenever he comes to the state. He is mostly accompanied by his family over 40 women attendants to serve him about a dozen commandos from Haryana police private security guards and armed volunteers of DSS. His entourage which includes more than 100 vehicles used to lead to traffic snarls.

Curiously Rahim Singh has not been able to attract audience for his various programmes in the state. The organisers of the programmes had to struggle hard several times to convince people to attend his programmes.

None had raised any suspicion over the interest shown by Rahim Singh in the state in the wake of his visit of tribal-dominated Wayanad two years ago as he was engaged in social welfare activities and promoting a drug-free life. But many started expressing doubts as he and his supporters made no attempt to set up his ashram or service organisation in the state.

The doubts strengthened after he started frequenting the tourist spots and buying prime property. While he has already commenced work on a building on 40 acres of land he purchased close to three popular resorts at Vythiri in Wayand he is said to be negotiating a purchase deal at Vagamon another hill station located on the borders of Kottayam and Idukki districts.

The plot is part of the 830.24-acre Eagle Estate first bought by Thomas Grey Hill of the Thomas G. Hill and Company of Manchester in 1872. The estate changed many hands and the Dera purchased 40 acres from V.K. Zakeer Hussain of Malappuram on November 5 2012 for Rs 20 million.

The real estate deal has fueled speculation in the state that the Sikh cleric who is grappling with several criminal cases in Haryana including rape and murder is trying to park his money in real estate in the state.

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala had also hinted at his real estate interests while replying to a question in the state assembly recently.
