Japan hopes for early transition to democratic system in Thailand

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Japan on Monday expressed strong hope that the appointment of Thailand's interim prime minister serves as its first step towards smooth and early transition to a democratic system through parliamentary elections.

"Japan remains particularly attentive to the importance of the protection of basic rights and freedoms in Thailand," Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Kuni Sato said in a statement.

She made remarks as Thai junta leader Gen. Prayuth Chan-Ocha, who seized power in a military coup three months ago, assumed the post as premier earlier in the day.

"The Japanese government will continue to take necessary steps, including approaching the interim government, so as to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals and the smooth operation of Japanese companies in Thailand," Sato said.

At least 50,000 Japanese citizens live in Thailand.
