(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The fourth ministerial meeting of Libya's neighboring countries kicked off here on Monday under Egypt's chairmanship to tackle the latest developments in the volatile North African country.
The meeting was attended by foreign ministers of Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Sudan, Chad, a senior official from Niger as well as Arab League Secretary General Nabil Alaraby, the Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU) for Libya Dileita Mohamed
Dileita and Arab League Special Envoy to Libya Nasser Al-Qudwa.
In his opening speech, the Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry put forwards the details of an Egyptian initiative to address the turmoil in Libya.
He pointed out that initiative calls for an immediate ceasefire, launching of national dialogue, disarming all militias at the same time, building state institutions particularly a national army and countering the terrorist groups.
To achieve these goals, the Egyptian Minister proposed the formation of two group of actions to deal with the political aspects of the crisis, to be headed by Egypt and another to deal with the security and military aspects to be led by Algeria.
Shukry warned about the grave repercussions of the state of lawlessness in Libya on the neighboring countries, especially Egypt.
Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammad Abdulaziz urged the international community to help his country building its own institutions and find a political solution among warring parties in Libya.
Abdulaziz expressed hopes that the UN Security Council meeting on Libya on Wednesday would end up with strong resolution to impose a ceasefire and press different parties to negotiate a political solution to the crisis.
He also welcomed the Egyptian initiative to disarm all militias at the same time.
Abdulaziz unveiled he met and discussed early Monday the Egyptian initiative with his Egyptian counterpart Shoukry.
He pointed out that the meeting also touched upon Egypt's support to Libya to build its national army and countering the growing terrorism threat.
