(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Monday said the Alliance does not recognise the presidential elections held on Sunday in the Georgian breakaway region of Abkhazia.
"This election does not contribute to a peaceful and lasting settlement of the situation in Georgia. NATO Allies do not recognise the Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions of Georgia as independent states," he said in a statement.
He reiterated the Alliance's full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally-recognised borders.
The snap elections were held after a political crisis forced Aleksandr Ankvab, Abkhazia's president, to step down in June; four candidates are contesting the elections.
Abkhazia broke away from Georgia after the Russian-Georgian war in 2008 but only a few countries have recognized its declaration of independence.
