Gujarat court rings down the curtain on Modis selfie case

A court in Ahmedabad has ordered to drop all proceedings against the prime minister and former Gujarat chief minister after the complainant in the case police inspector H A Rathod did not take any objection to the clean chit given by the investigating agency.

On August 8 the Ahmedabad crime branch had submitted a 2000-page closure report in the case which meant that the investigating agency did not find any evidence against the accused for which he or she could be prosecuted.

The court on Friday accepted the report and disposed of the case by directing that all proceedings initiated against Modi for alleged violation of polls code be dropped in the absence of any proof. The court concurred with the investigators’ version that Modi did take a selfie with BJP’s symbol ‘lotus’ but it was a white lotus. While allowing them to close the case the court also okayed their conclusion that the media briefing that took place on the day of general elections was not a “meeting” at all and that the briefing took place at the request of the media persons and was impromptu and not a pre-arranged Press conference or public meeting. On scrutiny of statements by the media persons police and security personnel and BJP leaders present on the spot along with the documents the court found that Modi was not even within the 100-metre prohibited area of the polling booth and thus there was no violation of section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
