Opposition Leader Wins Abkhazia Elections


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Sukhumi August 25 (QNA) - Opposition leader in Abkhazia Raul Khadzhimba was elected president according to preliminary results. The participation rate was at 70%. The election committee said that Khadzhimba won 50.57% of the votes cast. His closest rival Aslan Bzhania won 35.91% of the votes. Bzhania acknowledged defeat to the former opposition leader. Abkhazia is a small country that announced itself an independent state in 1994 after a war with Georgia. Russia acknowledged Abkhazia's independence even though the international community is yet to do so. Abkhazia borders the Russian city Sochi. (QNA)
