Russia Norway US Inspectors to Make Open Skies Observation Flights


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Moscow August 25 (QNA) - A group of Russian inspectors will make an observation flight over Denmark in implementation of the international Treaty on Open Skies Colonel Ruslan Shishin acting chief of Russia's National Nuclear Risk Reduction Center told Russia's (Itar-Tass) News Agency. The Russian observation plane will make the flight along a route fixed with the side to be observed while Danish specialists on board will monitor the procedure for the use of observation equipment and compliance with the Treaty provisions.This will be this year's 25th observation flight by a plane of the Russian Federation over the territories of states that are Parties to the Treaty. Simultaneously a joint mission of the United States and Norway will make an observation flight over Russia and Belarus in implementing the Treaty on Open Skies. Shishin went on to say "Within a period from August 25 to 30 a joint US-Norwegian mission will make an observation flight over Russia and Belarus aboard an Americn observation aircraft OC-135B". He said that during the flight along an agreed route Russian and Belarusian specialists on board the observaton plane will monitor strict observance of the agreed parameters of the flight and the use of the Treaty-prescribed observation equipment. The OC-135B observation aircraft belongs to a type of air vehicles which which lack any armament. The aircraft and the on board observation equipment (aerial photography cameras) have undergone an international examination in which Russian specialists also took part which rules out the use of technical means other than thofe prescribed by the Treaty. The Treaty on Open Skies was signed in 1992. Thirty-four countries are Parties to the Treaty. Observation flights are made over Russia the United States Canada and European countries. The main purposes of the Treaty on Open Skies are to develop transparency assist in observing the implementation of arms control agreements broaden possibilities for preventing crises and and settle crisis situations within the framework of the OSCE and other international organizations.
