EU helps Italy to rescue immigrants

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) EU Commissioner for home affairs Cecilia Malmstrom on Sunday said she is "appalled by new tragedies at sea" and expressed condolences to the victims and their families.

According to media reports, dozens of illegal immigrants drowned after their boat sank off the coast of Libya on route to Italy yesterday. Malmstrom thanked the Italian authorities for the huge efforts put in place to assist and rescue thousands of illegal immigrants over the last days. "The European Commission remains committed to help Italy in its efforts," she said and noted that she will meet next Wednesday in Brussels Italian home minister Angelino Alfano in order to provide assistance. She reiterated the calls for EU Member States to provide assistance to Mediterranean countries facing increased migratory and asylum pressure, in particular by resettling people from refugees' camps outside the EU.
