(MENAFN - Arab News) The Al-Jawhara Stadium at the King Abdullah Sports City (KASC) in Jeddah is undergoing renovation after Aramco called for halting games in a statement that comes merely five months after the stadium opened.
Samir Nasr Al-Din director of Saudi Aramco Affairs in the Western Region said the company however does not have the right to approve or refuse games at the stadium.
He said the decision rests with the Saudi Football Association headed by Mohammed Al-Nowaiser who recently visited the stadium and assessed the condition of the field.
'New grounds have been placed in areas that were in need of renovation and the field has been replanted to make way for games' he said.
'Games should therefore be suspended at the stadium to allow for the completion of ongoing renovation. Resuming games in the coming days will only create other problems that will delay the preparation of the field which was eroded in recent games played under the Abdul Latif Jameel League.
It is Aramco's role to ensure the field is in sound state. It is not logical to have a stadium of such grandeur with dilapidated playing fields.'
