(MENAFN - Arab News) The Ministry of Labor's branch in the Eastern Province in cooperation with the Security department in Dammam has stepped up a campaign against labor law violators in various neighborhoods in the area.

A fool-proof plan was recently laid out with police cars stationed at strategic points and checkpoints specifically erected to check on the violators. The campaign resulted in the arrests of 223 people including 116 in violation of the labor law and 107 for breaching the residency permit law (Iqama).

Officials from the Inspection Department in the Eastern Province led the campaign with the cooperation of the police and the security departments.

A total of 16 workers were arrested for working with a third party working in a different profession from the one stated on their documents and working without the permission to do so.

Some workers employed in Dammam's showrooms as car dealers did not have residency permits to prove their identities.

The showrooms were later shut down to prevent the violators from escaping.

Mohammed Abdulrahman Al-Faleh director general of the Ministry of Labor in the Eastern province stresed on the importance of the role of inspection in monitoring the market and resolving its issues.

He said: 'Joint campaigns are being run in all the provinces which aim to correct the situation of the workers in the Eastern province according to the requirements and regulations of the labor and residency laws.'

Al-Faleh confirmed the beginning of applying the 'No working under the Summer Sun' law due to the health risks involved. The campaign also uncovered a total of 78 establishments in the Eastern Province in violation of this law with 236 workers being affected by the breach.

'We want to provide a safe working environment for workers and raise the level of health and safety as a means to reducing the accident rates and injuries' Al-Faleh said.

He warned that owners would face strict sanctions including the shutting down of their establishments and fines if they were found to be in violation of this law.

Al-Faleh called on the public to cooperate with the Labor Ministry by reporting violators on the toll free number 920001173 which will receive complaints and forward the cases to the Inspection and Developing Work Environment Agency.
