Omantel invests USD31m in submarine cable project

(MENAFN) Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) said it is investing USD31 million in the construction of a landing station for the Asia-Africa-Europe submarine cable network (AAE-1) in Marseilles, France, Times of Oman reported.

The station, which will be the first station operated by Omantel outside Oman, is part of the transnational submarine cable network which crosses South East Asia to Europe and across Egypt, while connecting several countries.

The company announced that their share in the consortium is worth USD40 million and that the investment in the landing station alone is USD31 million and that it is expected to be ready in 2015.

'We expect a new business relation in Europe, since we will be able to serve operators in Europe and the rest of the world through the landing station," Omantel's CEO said.
