Oman- MEDC adds WhatsApp facility to its Self Meter Reading system for accurate bills

(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) The Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC) has added a new feature to its Self Meter Reading facility wherein customers can send it a picture of their electricity meter reading through WhatsApp. The facility came into effect this month.

'This month onwards subscribers can send the picture of their electricity meter reading along with their electricity account number to our WhatsApp number 97777705. The reading can be sent between  the 15th and 25th of every month' MEDC official told Muscat Daily.

The move will not only help save time of customers and the company it will also help deal with customer complaints regarding receiving inaccurate bills.

'Every month I get billed for more or less the same amount even if I am out of the country. I came to know that no one comes to check my electricity meter but I get a bill as per previous usage' Hamdoon al Farsi a private sector employee living in Ghubrah said.

The MEDC official said that this happens when its technicians do not find customers at home at the time of reading the metre. So the bill is often charged based on the average power usage of the customer.

'We hope the new system will help in accurately recording the reading each month' the official said adding the new system complements the recently-launched prepaid meters. 'Prepaid meters have been a success too as they help subscribers monitor power consumption and regulate it accordingly.'
