US: Paying ransoms 'not right policy'

(MENAFN- Arab News) WASHINGTON: Paying ransoms to free hostages is 'not the right policy' the White House said on Friday three days after extremists released a video showing the execution of US journalist James Foley.

'We will not provide funds for terrorist organisms' Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said confirming a long-standing Washington policy amid claims from Islamic State militants that other countries had paid to have their nationals freed.

The execution of Foley represents a 'terrorist attack' against the US Rhodes said.

'When you see somebody killed in such a horrific way that represents a terrorist attack that represents a terrorist attack against our country and against an American citizen' Rhodes said.

He said the US stands ready to take additional action against Islamic State fighters and will not be restricted by the Iraq-Syria border. He said the group is more dangerous today than it was six months ago.

Rhodes said the US has done everything it can to rescue American hostages held by the group and will keep trying.
