(MENAFN - Arab News) Authorities have stepped up the campaign against car cleaners operating illegally on the city's streets.

Four Bangladeshis who had been scouring Riyadh's Al-Ahsa Road in search of vehicles to clean were recently arrested.

'That is why they are hardly visible along that road these days. We heard that they are going to be deported' said Ahmed Omar also a Bangladeshi and a sales crew at a fast-food chain along the street.

Authorities had been raiding the area but these car cleaners are good at hiding behind trees or fleeing the scenes when they sense inspectors are around.

'Still no matter how good they are at running authorities are also good at catching them' Omar told Arab News.

When one customer requested a cleaner to wash his car parked on the other side of the nearby supermarket the cleaner became suspicious and asked the man to bring his car around to where they operate.

Earlier Arab News reported that these car cleaners had been openly washing cars for anywhere between SR8 and SR10. They charge more for wiping the dashboard and car seats.

Other sales staff at various commercial establishments in the area said that there are many car cleaners offering their services in the area but they have lately been keeping a low profile.

'Once the campaign slackens these car cleaners will resurface on the streets to supplement the meager income they receive from their regular jobs or employers' they said.

These car cleaners take to the streets after finishing off their regular jobs and stay in the area until 11 p.m. when businesses close for the day.

Meanwhile Riyadh Municipality inspectors have arrested several illegal expat beggars disguised as cleaners on the city's streets local media said.

The workers dressed in yellow uniforms normally worn by contracted cleaners were caught on several streets squares and traffic signals trying to emotionally blackmail residents into giving them money the media said.

The arrested workers were seen competing to get to strategic locations especially during peak hours when people leave work and during the last few days of the month.

'These expats reportedly rush to clean streets near banks traffic signals and gathering areas' the media said.

The municipality has warned residents not to deal directly with beggars in disguise and to immediately report such encounters.

The municipality has appointed field inspectors to monitor cleaners and submit reports on their productivity on a daily basis.

Special committees meanwhile have been assigned to inspect workers' residences to verify that their contracting companies are providing them with a clean place to stay together with new uniforms the media said.
