Oman- Wahaibi claims top honours

(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Zakariya al Wahaibi of Musannah Sports City Sailing School clinched the top honours in the first ever National Optimist Championship which concluded in Sur last week.

The four-day championship was organised by Oman Sail and witnessed 45 young sailors aged nine to 14 from four sailing schools compete over four days.

The title victory also sealed Wahaibi's place in Oman's sailing squad for the forthcoming 17th Asian Games in Incheon South Korea that will be held from September 17- October 4.

The 14 year old won six of the nine races held at the championship while coming second in the other two as best eight races were counted for rankings.

Salim al Alawi and Marwan al Jabri from Bandar al Rowdha Sailing School finished second and third respectively while the lone girl competitor Samiya al Riyami came sixth. Wahaibi will be joined at the Asian Games by Samiya.

The top five boys at the championship along with Samiya will also compete in the IODA African Championship in Morocco that will be held from October 9-17.

"The National Championship was the first to be held in the Optimist class in Oman. There was intense competition and our young sailors have demonstrated high standards of sailing and determination. We are proud of every sailor who took part' said Rashid al Kindi Oman Sail's national team manager.

Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Bahwan al Mukhaini member of the State Council presented the awards.
