Berlin trying to block execution of German in China

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) German Foreign Ministry said Wednesday Berlin would do its utmost to commute or prevent the death sentence delivered against a German man in Xiamen city, China, yesterday.

The verdict, delivered against the man, 36, on two counts of premeditated murder, could be appealed against, the Ministry's spokesman Martin Schaefer said told reporters here.

Germany is opposed to the death penalty, Schaefer reaffirmed, voicing hope that the Supreme Court of China would overturn the verdict of Xiamen Intermediate People's Court.

The convict, yet to be identified, was reportedly motivated by jealousy for his ex-girlfriend.
