EU calls for enquiry into attack on refugee convoy in Ukraine


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso spoke with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on the phone yesterday and today to discuss the latest events in Ukraine.

According to a statement released by Barroso's office Tuesday he expressed his concern over the security situation and condemned the shelling of a refugee convoy.

Barosso urged an enquiry on this incident and recalled the need to protect civilian lives.

He underlined the need to stop border hostilities and the flow of arms and personnel from Russia into Ukraine.

According to media reports, a convoy of refugees was attacked in the Luhansk area of eastern Ukraine on Monday and reportedly 15 bodies have so far been recovered from the scene.

Barroso also said that, following the invitation he received by both the Russian President Valdimir Putin and Poroshenko to attend the Customs Union - Ukraine Summit meeting in Minsk on 26 August, he has decided to ask EU High Representative Catherie Ahston, EU Commissioners for trade Karel de Gucht, and energy Gunther Oettinger to represent the European Union in this event.
