Iraq- KRG calls for int'l donor conf. for Kurdistan


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Prime Minister of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Nechirvan Barzani on Monday called for organizing an international donors conference for the autonomous region, north Iraq.

During his meeting with the French ambassador to Iraq Denis Gauer, the Prime Minister stressed the urgent need for more humanitarian aid to enable the region to provide relief for the huge numbers of Iraqis displaced by the attacks of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant ISIL), according to a KRG statement.

Barzani warned of a potential humanitarian disaster unless an international aid campaign is launched to help thousands of the displaced in Northern Iraq, expressing gratitude to France for backing the KRG.

For his part, the French ambassador expressed his country's sympathy, as well as his own, with the people who had to leave their homes and property for fear of ISIL fighters. He reaffirmed Paris support to Irbil in the fight against terrorism. Gauer referred in that context to a phone call between French President Francois Hollande and Iraqi Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani, which again underscored full support by France to the international efforts backing the region against ISIL terrorists.

Hollande also highlighted French efforts to encourage the international community, the European Union in particular, to support the region.
