(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier vowed that his country would offer all support to Kurdish people and will not leave them facing terrorists alone.
In a joint press conference with Kurdistan President Masoud Barzani, Steinmeier urged Iraqis to unite to address the growing threat and attacks of militants of the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
He pledged full support of the Kurdistan Beshmerka forces against ISIL.
The German top diplomat described the situation of the Yazidi refugees as tragic. It is important to offer them urgent assistance, he said. Steinmeier announced Saturday that Germany will provide 24 million euro's worth of relief aid to displaced Iraqis north of the country.
For his part, Barzani assured that the "terrorist schemes" will fail. He added that the world has rushed to Kurdistan because it respects democracy, personal freedoms and all human values.
