France- Hollande calls on Russia to respect unity, sovereignty of Ukraine

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French President Francois Hollande on Saturday called on Russia to respect the unity and sovereignty of Ukraine in the aftermath of the latest developments in eastern Ukraine.

Hollande also urged Kiev's authorities to abide by self-control in the current military operations against separatists, according to a French presidency statement.

This came during a telephone call earlier in the day between Hollande and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, focusing on the latest developments in eastern Ukraine, noted the statement.

Both sides expressed deep concern over the situation in eastern Ukraine, the statement said, adding that both men underlined the humanitarian urgency and the needs of the population in the east of Ukraine.

France is ready for a new summit to support that process. The meeting of French, German, Ukrainian and Russian foreign ministers planned for Sunday (today) could be a first step towards that meeting, the statement pointed out.

On Friday, Ukraine said it destroyed part of an armored column from Russia that entered its territory overnight, and said its forces came under shellfire from Russia in what appeared to be a major military escalation between the ex-Soviet states. However, Russia denied any incursion inside Ukraine, while NATO accused Russia of being involved in 'destabilizing' eastern Ukraine.
