54 units fined for flouting environment rules in Ajman


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Ajman Municipality fined 54 industrial establishments and warned 376 others for flouting the environment protection rules in the last six months.The action was taken during inspections carried out by the Environment Section at the Health and Environment Department.

The section also refused licences to 18 industrial establishments for failing to meet the environment protection norms while it issued licences to 527 others for various industrial activities during this period.

Speaking to Khaleej Times Khalid Mueen Al Hosani Head of the Health and Environment Department said the section is currently reviewing 14 studies to evaluate the negative effects of new industrial projects. Inspectors of the section visited 1467 factories water distribution companies buildings using generators under-construction sites pools and plastic factories. During these visits the inspectors issued 376 warning letters and 54 fines to errant factories and companies that ignored the environment protection rules.

The section also received 99 complaints from the public about air and noise pollution caused by generators in many buildings.

Al Hosani stressed that the municipality would not tolerate the flouting of environment protection rules by the establishments.

Based on the complaints received at the municipality regarding environment pollution the section decided to ban industrial activities that cause bad odour as well as pollute the air from 10pm to 5am. These activities included manufacturing of cups and fiber glasses metal melting ship making painting and activities of gas companies and tyre factories.

Al Hosani pointed out that the section manages the solid and liquid waste produced by factories. “The waste generated by these factories amounted to 531938 tonnes during the last six months.”

He said the municipality has made it obligatory for the factories to instal waste treatment units. “Only 72 factories have installed the system and the municipality has given a grace period for the same to the others” he added.

The section is also making efforts to monitor the waste management practices of hospitals and clinics to ensure they are treating their medical wastes in a proper way. The medical clinics would face tough penalties if they are found getting rid of medical wastes in street-side garbage containers.
