Jet Airways flight plunges 5000ft as pilots sleep

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) According to the sources the commander and the first officer of the flight fell asleep while the aircraft was flying over Turkish airspace.Passengers aboard a Jet Airways flight from Mumbai to Brussels last Friday had a major scare when it plunged some 5000 feet while flying over Turkey after both the pilots reportedly fell asleep.

India’s aviation regulator the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a probe into the incident which according to various sources had not been reported by the crew after completing the flight as required under the rules. “Jet Airways has initiated an internal inquiry into the matter. The airline is also extending all cooperation in the matter to the DGCA by providing all necessary assistance for the inquiry” the airline said in a brief statement on the incident without giving any details.

“Safety is of paramount importance to Jet Airways as is also the welfare of our guests and crew and the airline will always take appropriate steps to ensure the same” the statement added. According to the sources the commander and the first officer of the flight fell asleep while the aircraft was flying over Turkish airspace. During this period the flight came down from 34000 feet to 29000 feet. The DGCA has taken a serious view of the fact that the pilot did not mention the incident at the end of the flight.

The pilots are required to document any untoward incident that may have occurred during the flight in the mandatory flight safety report (FSR). In a separate incident a Jet Airways flight 9W 2654 from Delhi to Bhopal had a precautionary rejected take-off at Delhi on Thursday morning due to engine fire warning.

The ATR aircraft has since been grounded at Delhi for inspection by the Jet Airways engineering staff.

All the passengers were deplaned safely and taken back to the terminal building without any event a spokesperson for the airline said.

The aircraft was later changed and the flight duly departed for its destination at 0850 hours the spokesperson said.
