Adil Al Jocker Director of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Dubai Police said that the girl the other five were rushed to the hospital in a serious condition.

The police investigation revealed that one of the residents in the building had applied the banned aluminium phosphide in his apartment as he was getting ready to go on vacation to his home country. The gas from the pesticide travelled through the central air-conditioning duct to the apartments of the victims.

The police arrested four suspects and referred them to the Dubai Public Prosecution for allegedly causing the death of two persons and putting the lives of others at risk.

Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation Affairs said the police were alerted on July 29. By the time the police and ambulances arrived in the building one person had already died. Six others who were in serious conditions were rushed to the hospital.

Though the police first suspected food poisoning as the cause they noticed a pungent smell throughout the floor on which the apartments of victims were situated. A specialist from the Dubai Municipality found that the smell came from one of the flats.

The police interrogated the tenant of that flat who admitted that he had applied aluminium phosphide which he got from a relative. This relative’s questioning led to two others and all four were arrested.
