(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Online extortion gangs get in touch with specifically young males through social media websites and lure them into engaging in lewd acts. The Dubai Police have registered 13 cases of cyber blackmailing during Ramadan this year. According to Major-General Salem bin Salmeen Director of the Anti-Crime department at the Dubai Police online extortion gangs get in touch with specifically ‘young males’ — especially those who have managerial and administrative jobs — through social media websites and lure them into engaging in lewd acts using images and videos and dubbed voices of girls as baits. These gangs then blackmail victims after recording explicit videos and images of the victims. They then threaten victims of posting their indecent footage or images online or sending them to their lists of families and friends unless they transfer money to them Major-General Salmeen said.

He said the Dubai Police in cooperation with other Arab countries is working to curb this crime and arrest the perpetrators. The police traces such videos and removes them. The police are also collaborating with social media companies Facebook and Twitter in order to check any suspected accounts.
