US retail, food sales stable in July


(MENAFN) According to new data released, US retail and food services sales continued in the same pace in July, indicating a cautious behavior by consumers, Xinhua reported.

Sales totaled USD439.8 billion last month, same as the previous month's figures. Compared to a year earlier, sales showed a 3.7 percent increase, the Commerce Department said.

Motor vehicles sales edged down 0.2 percent, department store sales down 0.7 percent and building material sales and garden equipment were up 0.2 percent.

Personal consumption, which accounts for about 70 percent of overall economic activity, grew 2.5 percent in the second quarter from 1.2 percent in the previous quarter.
