Smarter farm machines aim to increase productivity with lower investments.
Pune 13 August 2014. Although India is the largest volume market for tractors in the world; farm mechanization is still at a nascent stage. The average farm power availability in the country is lower than several developing countries. Scientific research has shown that farm power availability is directly correlated to farm productivity. Only a small fraction of farmers' base can afford the expensive farm mechanization options that are available today.
In terms of acreage India is among the top two or three countries in the world. However in terms of production India ranks lower than others.
In order to attain the projected demand of 280 MT of food grains by 2020-21 farm power availability in the country has to be scaled up to at least 2.0 Kw/ha. In order to achieve this Farm Mechanization has to be given primacy.
Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited one of the pioneers in agricultural pump set business has decided to address this issue. Speaking on the occasion Mr. Antony Cherukara Vice President Strategy & Head- Agri & Allied Business saidthat “Kirloskar as a brand has been associated with the Indian farming community for many decades. The idea is to do more with less.” He also said that Kirloskar have ambitious plans to introduce range of farm mechanization products in the coming time. “We are expanding our dealer network to meet and service the growing requirements of our farmers. With a brand like Kirloskar good times certainly lie ahead.”
The lack of proper agricultural knowledge and poor agricultural machinery results in high costs and low profitability. Smarter machines which require less investment will not only save on labor costs but will also increase profitability.
