Death toll of Sudan floods tops 77 people


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Sudanese Ministry of Health announced Wednesday that the recent massive flooding killed 77 people and wounded 227 others.

The floods, resulting from torrential rains, destroyed 15,000 houses totally and some 20,000 others partially in 51 districts in 15 out of the country's 18 states, thus displacing 36,256 families, according to a statement by the ministry.

The ministry set up 94 field hospitals in the flood-hit areas in order to prevent any outbreak of serious diseases, it said.

Acknowledging the detection of some cases malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia, the ministry ruled out any outbreak of these diseases.

Similar floods killed 73 people and displaced 320,000 others in Sudan last year.
