Japan to Protest over Russia's Military Exercises on Disputed Islands


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Tokyo August 13 (QNA) - Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Wednesday the Japanese government will lodge a protest with Russia over military exercises on a islet chain off Hokkaido at the heart of a territorial dispute. Calling the military exercises on the Northern Territories "totally unacceptable" Abe told reporters in Yamaguchi Prefecture western Japan "We will lodge a strong protest with Russia through the Foreign Ministry. "The Northern Territories are an inherent part of Japan's territory and we cannot accept the move" (Kyodo) quoted a senior ministry official as saying a day after Russia announced it began military exercises on the Russia-held Japan-claimed islands.
