Germany doesn't rule out military assistance to Iraq
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel did not rule out Tuesday the government's sending weapons to Iraq to help the country fight the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL).
The German government announced yesterday that its support for Iraq would be restricted to humanitarian assistance. But the statement of Gabriel, also Minister of Economy and Energy, indicated a change in this position.
"Legally Germany can supply the Iraqi army with weapons," Gabriel said following a meeting with representatives of the Yazidi minority community in Germany.
Gabriel, of the Social Democratic Party, said the German government would study all possible means to help Iraq.
