US condemns killing of Tripoli police chief

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US on Tuesday condemned the assassination of Colonel Mohammad Sweissi, the chief of police in Tripoli, Libya, who was described as "a committed public servant." Sweissi was attacked by masked gunmen as he was leaving a meeting in the Tajoura neighbourhood.

"His murder and the senseless acts of violence against other officials, activists and citizens throughout Libya threatens to undermine the aspirations for which the Libyan people have sacrificed so much," said State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf.

"We are deeply concerned by (the) ongoing violence (it) will not solve Libya's problems," she added. "We urge dialogue and compromise to build a free, prosperous and democratic Libya."
