Oman prepared to tackle Ebola, says WHO official

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A World Health Organization (WHO) official has said that Oman is well prepared to handle an outbreak of Ebola virus. The Ministry of Health (MoH) is taking all necessary precautions as prescribed by WHO.

Speaking to Muscat Daily Dr Abdullah Saleh Assaedi a WHO representative in the sultanate said 'There hasn't been a single case that has been possibly reported in Oman but since this virus has 62 per cent mortality rate it is vital for the state to be extremely well prepared. We also advise the ministry to contact us in case of outbreak of a case and send us specimen for confirmation.'

He added 'Oman is well prepared as MoH is already on its toes arranging for the precautions. People should read the symptoms and be aware of the disease. Medical help should be sought in case of suspicion. The hospitals should also have facilities where they can completely isolate the patient. Oman has been extremely effective in preventing MERS cases in the region and we are certain Ebola will be handled in a similar way.'

Dr Assaedi said that the first meeting of the Emergency Committee under international health regulations came up with the advisory for various states. 'The advisory has been divided into three categories namely states with Ebola transmission states with potential threat and all states. Oman falls under the third category.'

A senior MoH official said 'We have put all medical facilities on alert with WHO announcing Ebola as a world emergency. The hospitals are well equipped and teams have been trained. Hopefully we will tackle the cases if required. We are also issuing posters and handouts to create awareness.'

The official confirmed that Oman will participate in the GCC health ministers meeting in Riyadh on Wednesday to discuss the Ebola outbreak international developments on the disease state of readiness monitoring and emergency response.
