US Condemns South Sudan and Rebels' Failure to Meet Peace Deadline


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Washington August 12 (QNA) - The United States has strongly condemned the failure of South Sudan's warring parties to meet the Sunday deadline to reach a peaceful settlement to end the eight-month-long conflict and form a transitional government by Sunday's deadline On June 10 South Sudan President Salva Kiir and his former vice president Riek Machar agreed in a meeting attended by the IGAD heads of states and governments to complete peace negotiations and to form a transitional government of national unity within 60 days. A report broadcast by Radio Sawa quoted the US Secretary of State John Kerry's statement issued from Washington. Kerry condemned the warring parties for their inability to set aside difference and start the peace process. He urged African bodies to intervene in this matter. At least 10000 people have been killed since fierce fighting erupted in South Sudan in December pitting President Salva Kiir's government forces against supporters of Riek Machar his former deputy and longtime political rival.
