France- Hollande discusses Iraq, region with Turkey's Erdogan

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French President Francois Hollande on Monday held a telephone conversation with newly-elected Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss regional developments, Hollande's office said.

The French leader congratulated Erdogan on his election August 10 after the first round of voting and he committed to the Turkish leader his desire to strengthen bilateral relations, which have been strained in past years because of French objections to Turkey joining the European Union and also because of the Armenian "genocide" question, made a national issue in France.

In Monday's conversation both leaders "noted their concern over the evolution of the situation in Syria and Iraq and expressed their determination to pursue a mobilisation of the international community, notably in order to respond to the humanitarian emergency." Hollande's office further noted in a statement that France and Turkey stressed "the necessity to rapidly create the political conditions in Iraq that would allow to effectively fight against the Islamic State (ISIL) and answer the aspirations of all the population in that country." Hollande and Erdogan urged that Prime Minister-designate Haidar Al-Abadi should form a national unity government rapidly and both men expressed support for the leaders already in place in the Iraqi Parliament and at the Presidency.
