Ban welcomes forward movement toward gov't formation in Iraq

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday commended Iraqi President Fuad Masum for having charged Dr. Haider Al-Abadi, "in accordance with the Iraqi Constitution," with the formation of a new government, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric told the daily press briefing.

Ban "encourages Dr. Al-Abadi, Prime Minister-designate, to form a broad-based government acceptable to all components of Iraqi society, in accordance with the constitutional time-frame," he said.

He added that Ban is concerned that heightened political tensions, coupled with the current security threat of 'Islamic State' (IS), "could lead the country into even deeper crisis," and urged all political parties and their supporters to "remain calm and respect the political process governed by the Constitution.

"The people of Iraq deserve to live in a safe, prosperous and stable country - one that all groups in Iraq, including religious and ethnic minorities, can meaningfully contribute to and feel as their own," he stressed.

Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki, whose policy of alienating the Sunni minority drove scores into revolt and cooperation with the terrorist group 'Islamic State,' remained defiant and sent out his supporters in the streets of Baghdad earlier today to claim that President Massoum's decision was unconstitutional.
