Obama voices approval of new Iraqi leader

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) President Barack Obama voiced his support for the designation of Haider Al-Abadi as the new Prime Minister of Iraq and withheld mention of incumbent Nouri Al-Maliki, in a speech he made from his vacation in Martha's Vineyard on Monday.

Obama noted the designation of Al-Abadi was "important step forward."

Obama reiterated that there was not military solution for the conflict in Iraq.

"The only lasting solution is for Iraqis to come together and form an inclusive government," he added.

"This new leadership has a difficult task to regain the confidence of its citizens by governing inclusively and taking steps to demonstrate its resolve," he told the press.

Al-Maliki refused Al-Abadi's designation as a constitutional breach, arguing his State of Law coalition controlled a majority in the parliament.

Obama urged Al-Abadi to form a government as "quickly as possible.

"I urge all Iraqi political leaders to work peacefully through the political process in the days ahead," Obama said.
