(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Women members of the party also tied similar precious tomato rakhis on the writs of passersby near the busy junction in the city.With prices of vegetables going through the roof in Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled Gujarat the Congress’s women’s wing in Vadodara has sent a rakhi (sacred thread) decorated with tomatoes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to protest skyrocketing prices of vegetables.
Vadodara Congress chief Narendra Rawat told Khaleej Times that the party marked the Rakshabandhan Day (on Sunday) by couriering the ‘rakhi’ made of tomatoes and other vegetables to the former Gujarat chief minister to remind him about his promise of achchhe din (good days).
Pushpa Vaghela president of the Congress women unit in Vadodara Gujarat’s cultural capital said that women members of the party also tied similar precious tomato rakhis on the writs of passersby near the busy junction in the city to express their anger over spiralling prices.
“Modi had promised ‘achchhe din’ during election campaigning to win votes. But housewives are passing through bad days with tomatoes costing Rs120 a kg. The high prices have upset their household budget” she said.
Meanwhile after tying ‘rakhi’ to Modi in New Delhi on Friday Gujarat Chief Minister Anandi Patel also met Amit Shah BJP national president at his Ahmedabad residence on Sunday and tied the sacred thread on his hand.
In Rajkot some 800 women visited the city’s high-security central jail on the occasion of Rakshabandhan a Hindu festival which celebrates a strong brother-sister bond to tie ‘rakhis’ on the wrists of their brothers who are lodged in the prison which houses 1400 men.
Incidentally most ‘rakhi’ manufacturers and artisans in Gujarat are Muslims.
