Banned pesticide causes death in Dubai apartment four held


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Police investigations revealed that one of the residents in the building sprayed the banned insecticide Aluminum Phosphide in his apartment before going on leave.Four men have been arrested after a banned insecticide infiltrated through the air-conditioning system of an apartment which left one person dead and six others sick on the day after Eid. The suspects have been referred to the public prosecution.

Police investigations revealed that one of the residents in the building sprayed the banned insecticide Aluminum Phosphide in his apartment before going on leave which spread through the central air conditioning.

Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police confirmed the arrests.

He stated that some insecticides are banned to prevent poisoning caused by them. They spread very quickly especially through the central air conditioning systems he said.

Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation stated that the police were notified about the incident on July 29. The victims were rushed to the hospital where one was pronounced dead while the condition of one other person is stated to be critical.

Food poisoning was initially suspected but a pungent smell in the building led a specialist from the Dubai Municipality to the apartment where the illegal insecticide was sprayed.

The police interrogated the tenant of the flat who admitted to spraying the insecticide. He said he got it from a relative following which the police recovered large quantities of the substance from his house. Investigations led the police to the main suspect who had large quantities of unlicensed pesticides at his home.
