Charity in race against time to aid Gaza kids

Salam Ya Seghar runs under the patronage of Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi wife of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah; and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs. As part of its humanitarian efforts Salam Ya Seghar has donated $1 million to the children of Gaza in response to ‘Save Gaza 2014’ humanitarian appeal. UAE aid arrives in Gaza

The fifth Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) delegation chaired by Humaid Al Shamsi Deputy Secretary-General of the ERC for International Aid Affairs on Sunday distributed relief aid donated by the UAE which arrived here yesterday in seven trucks.

The relief aid which included food stuff health materials blankets children’s milk and potable water was distributed in cooperation with the Palestinian Red Crescent and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Al Shamsi expressed happiness to carry out the task of distribution of aid to people affected by the events in the Gaza Strip especially the elderly and children stressing that the people of Gaza deserve every assistance and help.

He said in a statement during the distribution of aid that the ERC performs an intensive relief programme for the people of Gaza adding that it has so far distributed more than 150000 relief parcels. He explained that the aid this time has been allocated to children and women.

Emad Abu Laban Director of the ERC in Gaza said it distributed aid to 500 families in Al Shamsi’s presence. — Wam Salam Ya Seghar aims to provide food aid to 5000 families; 30000 hot meals to hospital patients; clothing to 6000 children; assistance for 150 disabled victims; school bags and stationery for 3000 children; and medical supplies to five hospitals and health centres. This will be done in “strategic phases” over the next seven months.

The conflict has left 70000 children traumatised and in urgent need of psychological treatment. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Palestine over 80000 people desperately need food clean drinking water and medical attention.

Shaikha Jawaher explained: “Salam Ya Seghar first came to the rescue of Palestinian children eight years ago and they have remained in our hearts since then. Now we must act urgently and respond the same way we would if these children were our sons and daughters. Let us bring hope and relief to ease their suffering.”

Salam Ya Seghar will work hand-in-hand with the Palestinian Ministry of Health Gaza Association for Culture and Arts Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund the Development Centre National Association for the Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities and Care Centre for Special Groups.

In addition to immediate interventions Salam Ya Seghar will also make more long term contributions such as increasing the readiness of emergency departments in hospitals and delivering therapy programmes for war casualties with disabilities or special needs. This could save countless lives as Gaza’s health services have been crippled with 140 varieties of drugs having run out and 80 more running out soon.
