France suggests European lifeline for displaced people N. Iraq

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Visiting French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius announced Sunday that he will lobby the European partners to open a humanitarian corridor for helping the internally-displaced people in Kurdistan region, north Iraq.

At a joint press conference with President of the Kurdistan Region Massoud Barzani, Fabius said he will raise the proposal to launch an air corridor from Europe to Kurdistan during a meeting with his European counterparts early this week.

"The US and Britain as well as other European partners understand the urgency of scaling up the international relief effort for the displaced people in north Iraq," he affirmed.

He noted that he has delivered in the last few hours humanitarian aid to families of the Yazidi ethnic minority who are displaced in Sinjar area, Nineveh Governorate, northwest Iraq.

Fabius affirmed support of France to Iraq and Kurdistan in their battle against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), saying: "This is a war for freedom and France is the country of freedoms.

"To win this battle the necessary political conditions must be created. Therefore, we hope that an inclusive national unity government will be formed in Iraq as soon as possible," he stressed.

On his part, Barzani expressed gratitude to France, the US and Britain for their timely response to the humanitarian emergency in the region and the military assistance to the Peshmerga fighters.
