The completely updated revision of Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill: A Call to Action Against TV Movie and Video Game Violence was released on August 5 2014 by Harmony Books/Penguin Random House. In 1999 David Grossman a retired lieutenant colonel recognized for his study of human aggression joined with Parent Coaching Institute founder/CEO Gloria DeGaetano to write a book arguing that media and video game violence encourages violence in youth. This 2014 revision of this popular book gives parents professionals and policy makers a comprehensive guide for understanding how the prolific use of sensational violence in television movies and in video games affects kids’ attitudes and actions.Â
The book explains the new science detailing both the risk and protection factors and contains more family media literacy activities along with a new chapter on the impact of harmful media violence on children's and teen's self-identity.
Erin McNeill Director of Media Literacy Now states “People in public health education law enforcement social services medicine all intuitively recognize that there is a connection between violent media and real-world violence but the spin from corporations that profit from violence is powerful. DeGaetano and Grossman have brought it all together for us: the overwhelming evidence the history the psychology the physiology – and they offer the urgently needed media literacy solutions…Not only does every parent need to read this book every policymaker needs to read it. This book will be a key resource in our work to put media literacy onto the public policy agenda and demand action from our leaders.â€
Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill is available in both paperback and Kindle versions on-line or at your local bookstore. Gloria DeGaetano is available for public speaking engagements to discuss the book. You may contact her at info@pcicoach.com.
