Iraqi government warplanes abort ISIL bid to advance northward

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Iraqi Government warplanes bombed forces of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant as they were advancing toward positions manned by the Kurdish fighters near Sinjar in Ninawa in northern Iraq, according to an official statement issued on Saturday.

The Iraqi Air Force planes aborted an attempt by the ISLI fighters to turn around the Peshmerga fighters that have been attempting to retake Sinjar, said the statement, released by the National Information Center.

The warplanes attacked the ISIL military vehicles and knocked out a cannon, it said, adding that air strike forced them to pull back.

ISIL forces, in control of some central regions, have been seeking to advance toward Kurdish-patrolled regions in the north of the country.
