Iraq- Peshmerga rescues 10,000 Yazidis trapped in Sinjar Mount

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Zerevani, the gendarmes of the Kurdish Peshmerga, said Saturday they managed to rescue dozens of families of the Yazidi ethnic minority who were trapped in Sinjar Mount, Ninawa Governorate, northwest Iraq.

At the behest of President of the Kurdistan Region Massoud Barzani, the Zerevani forces ascended the mountain last night and saved dozens of families stuck there, commander of the First Brigade of Zerevani forces Major General Saeed Kestea said.

"The displaced families who fled their homes in Singal District for fear of attacks by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) were evacuated to a safer area inside Kurdistan," he added.

Meanwhile, Mayor of Singal District Haji Saleh estimated the number of evacuees at 10,000, noting that these people face a humanitarian disaster.

Haji Saleh called on the people of Kurdistan to provide food assistance to these displaced people, highlighting the need for vehicles to take them to safer areas.

Since the ISIL militants took control of Singal last week, about 1,000 Yazidis have been killed and a similar number of women have been kidnapped, he added.
