Obama discusses world issues with Cameron


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) US President Barack Obama spoke over the phone Saturday with British Prime Minister David Cameron on the crises in Iraq, Ukraine, and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

On Ukraine, the leaders, "agreed to provide additional, immediate humanitarian assistance, and to develop options that will secure the safety of the civilians on Mount Sinjar," according to a White House statement.

They also discussed ways to counter threats from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) against Iraqis and the need for the country to form an inclusive government capable of "pulling the country together." On Ukraine, they agreed any Russian intervention in the country, even under purported humanitarian auspices, without approval from the Ukrainian government is a violation of international law and will provoke additional consequences.

On Gaza, the leaders condemned the resumption of rocket fire and called for an end to the hostilities in order to create a sustainable ceasefire. Both also reiterated support for Israel's right to defend itself but emphasized Israel's need to minimize civilian casualties.

Regarding the Ebola outbreak, the two welcomed the World Health Organization's efforts and vowed to increase assistance from the British and American governments.
