(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Washington August 08 (QNA) - In an effort to curb the advance of the militant group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in northern Iraq US President Barack Obama has authorized targeted airstrikes against their convoys if they approach Irbil where the US maintains a consulate with both diplomatic and military personnel. In a televised address from the White House late on Thursday Obama said the US will "stay vigilant and take action if these terrorist forces threaten our personnel or facilities anywhere in Iraq." "We're also providing urgent assistance to Iraqi government and Kurdish forces so they can more effectively wage the fight against ISIL" he announced.(QNA)
