US Missile Cruiser Enters Black Sea


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Moscow August 07 (QNA) - US guided-missile cruiser Vella Gulf entered the Black Sea on Thursday where it has been deployed to keep peace and stability in the region a US Navy press release said. "Vella Gulf's mission is to improve interoperability and work toward mutual goals demonstrating the United States' commitment to strengthening the collective security of NATO allies and partners in the region" the press release said. The US Navy went on to say that the Ticonderoga-class cruiser arrived in the Black Sea in order to contribute to the maritime security of the region carry out training missions and support NATO operations. Vella Gulf is homeported in Norfolk Virginia and is deployed in a multi-mission role in the Naples-headquartered US Sixth Fleet operations. Earlier in July Vella Gulf participated in the at-sea portion of Exercise Breeze 2014 along with other naval forces from Bulgaria Italy Turkey Greece and Romania. Also in July NATO brought nine ships to the Black Sea the largest number of NATO ships in the region for the past 10 years. (QNA)
