PPP JI vow to protect democratic system

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Pakistan Peoples Party and the Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday vowed to save the democratic system in the country amid political turmoil.Speaking at a joint Press briefing after an hours long meeting PPP’s senior leader Khursheed Shah and JI Amir Sirajul Haq looked to be on same page to protect Sharif government which seems to be shaking by Qadri’s revolution call and Imran Khan’s planned ‘Azadi March’ on August 14.

Shah who is also the Opposition leader in the National Assembly said that his party was making contact with all major political parties to defuse the tense situation.

“We all have agreed on supremacy of law and constitution. We will contact other political forces to improve the situation. If God willing we will succeed” said Shah.

Shah said it was satisfactory factor that all political parties in the parliament and outside it believed in democratic system and wanted to see democracy in the country.

He said that if political parties remain united no one could dare derail democracy but a split among political parties provide chances to undemocratic forces.

The PPP leader said that the country has suffered due to 56 years of dictatorship and it could not afford any more military coups.

He said PPP chief Asif Ali Zardari has contacted Imran Khan and other political leaders to defuse the tension for the sake of democracy.

He said that the PPP and JI agreed not to become part of any move that could damage democracy.

To a query on Imran’s demand for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s resignation Shah said that resignation is not a solution to any issue and added that the system could be improved through electoral reforms.

JI chief Sirajul Haq said that politics is not hard like stone but flexible like water and added that matters could be sorted out through negotiations.

“We discussed political situation today especially Imran Khan’s rally we have underscored the need that we should play our role rather than serving as silent spectators. We think that holding protests and making demands is a legal and constitutional right of every political party but the politics also requires a flexible attitude” he said.

He said former president Zardari also telephoned him and discussed fresh confrontation between political parties. “He was of the view that there should be no chaos in the country and I think that Imran doesn’t wish to undermine the democracy through such steps.”

He said they cannot remain silent on present political situation and vowed to take every possible step to safeguard the system. For more news from Khaleej Times follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/khaleejtimes and on Twitter at khaleejtimes Follow khaleejtimes ->
